| the ubiquity of such chains ensures the provision of mediocre services and products, displaces locally owned retailers, compromises true interaction of supply and demand in a capitalist system, and generally weakens our communities. some, admittedly, are more evil than others. starbucks sells only fair trade certified coffees. walmart, on the other hand, is the only retailer in some small communities. its decision not to carry a book or magazine--or to demand the alteration of music to suit its tastes--is tantamount to censorship. |
